Election of new board members

7 Board positions are up for re-election this GA. Here’s a short FAQ about what it means to be on the board and how to run for election.

What does the board do?

The board is the main point of contact between Alumni (as in, the collection of former students, not the organisation) and IPC. We keep a connection to the school via different activities, such as reunion weekend and summer camp for the mutual benefit alumni, current students and IPC.

We also do our best to maintain the social networks of IPC students around the world and keep everyone in touch.

Is it a lot of work?

It’s not too much. Maybe one or two hours per month usually. It can get a more busy leading up to Reunion weekend and Summer camp, but otherwise it is quite relaxed. Board meeting are usually every month or two months.

It’s important to remember that the work is voluntary. It’s alright if someone can’t make it to a board meeting or needs a break.

If I’m elected, how long am I a board member?

Two years.

This is the term length before being required to go for reelection. Board members may resign at any time for any reason, but most board members complete the full two years.

How do I run for election?

Attending the General Assembly, either in person or online, is the easiest way to run for a position on the board.

If you are unable to attend, send a email to alumni@ipc.dk and we’ll add a short slide about yourself.
Here’ what you might want to include:

• Your name
• What term or terms you attended IPC
• An interesting photo of yourself
• A short description about who you are.

Authorised Signatories Amendment

Below is an amendment to allow for a single authorised signatory to sign on behalf of IPC Alumni. The previous language was not explicit, and could be misinterpreted in another manner.

In a real world case, Our bank was unclear about the language and interpreted it as all stated members being authorised signatories and required all their signatures to enter agreements. This usually includes the paperwork for changes in board members and charter. Denmark uses a digital system for banks and other institutions to identify people and can also be used to sign contracts. Board members who are not residents of Denmark and are not in this system are required to sign via paper mail.

This amendment would massively streamline these processes and allow IPC Alumni to begin operating quickly after a board and/or charter change.

§ 6 The following members of the board are authorised signatories and legal representatives of IPC Alumni:

• Chairperson
• Vice Chairperson
• Project Coordinator
• Treasurer

 § 6.1 When making agreements, contracts or arrangements of similar nature with external parties and organisations, One of the members listed in § 6 must be present as a signatory.

Future of the Volunteer Program

The Volunteer Program was an initiative between IPC Alumni, IPC and Erasmus to spread the message of human rights to IPC Students and, in turn, the world. Some may remember the Human Rights Cafe, A cozy cafe ran by the volunteers which stands just before the lake.

Since 2022, The volunteer program has laid dormant, including its funding. Since then, all involved parties have been paid what they have been owed. Additionally, 30,000dkk which was agreed to be donated in 2020-2021 to IPC to procure new bicycles has been donated.

As a number of members are no longer directly involved, the future of the program remains uncertain. In light of this, the Board would like to put the decision to the General Assembly.

3. On what matters should these funds be spent? (Discussion into vote)
4. Does spending of these funds require approval from the GA (Yes/No)

IPC Alumni Board

What is Summer Camp?

Summer Camp at IPC is a week-long program where we help improve the school in exchange for room and board, so you just need to show up and help out. We do different projects from building gazebos, painting, cleaning up the forest, general maintenance, whatever the school might need. This year, our primary projects will be painting rooms in corridors, refinishing the dining rooms tables, repairing broken furniture, finishing the bars, and general forest clean up. You don’t have to know how to do any of these things, we just need willing hands and we can teach you the rest. If you do have skills in any of these areas, all the better!

When is Summer Camp?

It will take place from Monday July 14th to Sunday July 20th. You can arrive any time on Monday, though we will have some afternoon/evening activities to get to know each other, so best to come early if possible.

What does an average day look like?

We start out the day with breakfast and morning fellowship, then get straight to work afterwards to avoid the hot sun. We end work at lunch time, and then the afternoon is either free time or planned activities. We all have dinner together, and then night time is hangout time. Some years we cook for ourselves, other years the school does the cooking for us.

How do I sign up?

Sign up is currently open, and you can sign up using the google form at the bottom of the page or here.

Sign up will end in June or when Summer Camp fills up, whichever comes first. Please note that signing up does not instantly guarantee coming to Summer Camp. Once you sign up, we will confirm with the school who is coming and then notify you by email that you can come. This year, we will send a list to the school every month of the new participants that have signed up, so you should know within a few weeks. The earlier you sign up, the earlier you will know you can come and book your flights!

UPDATE: Juro has withdrawn his candidacy to the IPC Alumni Board. This means, by default, Gabo and Gabriel will now be members of the IPC Alumni Board. An update will be posted to social media and via E-mail.

Autumn 2012

Gabo here from Autumn Term 2012 ( subtle gasp).

Since my IPC days, unfortunately I have had to accept the fact of growing up and I got into the world of tech, working at various exciting startups and some bigger enterprises.

The Alumni is THE embodiment of the IPC spirit and their role in making sure multiple generations of us can stay connected and regularly re-live our best days at this gem of a place is key.

I want to put my mega-exciting, Linkedin worthy 9 to 5 experience to good use and help the Alumni in organising fantastic events so we can all share long, emotional hugs various times of the year.

Gabriel Brigante

I am Gabriel Brigante, 35 years, I’m from Brazil, living currently in Spain and I came to IPC as student in Autumn 2012 and as Student Teacher in Spring 2014. Since then, I came back 3 times to Reunion Weekends, and I feel like I can bring value to the board with my experience working for 10 years with Human Resources in corporate and third-sector organizations. I specifically work managing Diversity and Inclusion projects and programs, including organizing big events and learning initiatives, so I believe I can support a lot with some project management skills, and with knowledge for ensuring our events/initiatives are accessible, inclusive and account to represent IPC’s diversity. 

Applications for Summer Camp 2024 are now available, and you’re able to do so right here. We don’t have many details about what we could do during summer camp (The IPC caretakers are very busy people!) but we hope to get more details as soon as possible

What’s going to happen at summer camp?

Summer camp is a week where a group of alumni get together to help out the school, usually with some kind of maintenance or to build something cool for the schools benefit. Often the work is outdoor, but if the weather isn’t great there’s always something to do indoors.

Last year, we spent the most of our time clearing the area around the lake of small brush, especially near the water to make the area feel less swampy. Unfortunately the outcome of last year isn’t certain as the lake has been overflowing since January. The back gazebo has now been affectionately named “The Island” by Autumn 2023 due to the flooding.

We will most likely be cooking for ourselves, as the kitchen staff will be on holiday. It doesn’t sound as bad as it seems. The school gives us a budget and we go shopping and a small group will cook meals for everyone.

What is General Assembly

General Assembly a meeting of the Alumni to discuss the general operations and inner working of IPC Alumni as an organization. Things that are commonly discussed include: The past year in review, Alumni’s financial situation, new and upcoming goals, any potential charter changes, and the election of new board members.

This upcoming General Assembly is our ordinary annual meeting, taking place during Reunion Weekend.

Election for the Board

2 Board positions will be open for election. Elections take place during General Assemblies.

What does being a board member involve?

The Board consists of 9 voluntary members. The function of the board is to maintain and run Alumni activities, such as Reunion Weekend and Summer Camp, along with any other ongoing alumni projects.

The board is expected to have meetings every two to three months, with two of those meetings happening at IPC. Members can be reimbursed for 75% their travel to and from IPC up to 2000dkk per year.

The workload is quite light and is voluntary. It should not take up a large amount of time to manage Alumni and are often if not always scheduled.

I want to run for election

That’s great!

You’re more welcome to campaign for your election via social media. We don’t have any particular guidelines for campaigning, but we expect all candidates to be reasonable about what they say.

Basically: Don’t slander anyone, no underhanded or cut-throat tactics, no promising monetary gains. Things that you wouldn’t wish a fellow candidate did to you.

Other than that, it’s open season. Campaign your hearts out.

Please let us know that you wish to run for the board by emailing us (alumni@ipc.dk) and bring along/prepare a photo ID (passport, id card). Should you be elected, you’ll need it when you sign on as a board member.

Reunion weekend will take place from the 3rd to the 5th. With arrival’s beginning on Friday afternoon.

An IPC organised festival with a breadth of activities. From deep talks and debates to international food and singing, the International People’s festival’s got it all. Join in on the debate on The Power of Citizenship: A Debate on Global Responsibility, with a great lineup of guest speakers who will ask what it means to be a global citizen and its responsibilities. Or join the Fællessang with Søren or African Drum and Dance with Sellasi.

Reunion Weekend Activities

We hope to create an environment for us all to get together, either to see old friends or meet new people from other terms and a fun activities is a great way to do it.

General Assembly

Sunday 5th of May

General Assembly is an annual meeting for Alumni to talk about IPC Alumni’s progress. IPC Alumni works democratically, so every member has a say.

The General Assembly agenda will be made available before the end of the month. It will outline the order of topics to be discussed, ranging from board-related general operations to financial matters.

Tickets

Tickets are now available, and you can get them right here! Tickets include accommodation at IPC and food in the dining hall, along with any events that will be running.

If you’re not a member of IPC Alumni already, you will need to become a member. That’s 200dkk for lifetime membership, with 100dkk going towards Friends of IPC Scholarships.

We hope to see you at IPC for a delightful reunion weekend.

NOTE: Please, if possible, do try to bring a sleeping bag.

While we haven’t finalised all the details, here’s a brief rundown of what to expect:

• Arrivals begin on Friday late afternoon and into the evening.
• IPC-hosted Peace festival
• Party evening (of course)
• General Assembly

A detailed post containing an agenda for general assembly will be available before the end of March.

Tickets will become available on March 22nd, at which time additional details will be provided.

This year we can host a total of 30 Alumni, which includes the organizers. You must be a member of IPC Alumni to join, so if you are not one, you can sign up here. 

Sign up will begin in about a week or two, and will be open for 3 weeks. Once we have the list of people, we will confirm with you and the school, and we will release more information about how things will work this year. So get excited, get ready, and start making plans!

Following Summer Camp 2023, There was a change in treasurer from Rasmus, who also has departed from the Alumni Board, to Elian (myself). The changeover has taken some time, as a result of my rather poor Danish and poor understanding of Danish systems and the bureaucracy. I’ve finally managed to get it sorted, so no worries there. I admit, I should have asked for help sooner!

What does this have to do with the website?
During the changeover, we missed the payment date for our website host, and as a result lost all data regarding the website. An oversight on my part. Now we have no choice but to build a new one!

Is there anything special about this new website?
Not at the moment, but there are some bold plans for it.

For starters, I believe it should be the main hub for Alumni related things. The social media landscape is so different from person to person, that it can be quite difficult in making sure we reach out to everyone. By having a well-utilised, dedicated hub, Information about Alumni events and general happenings can be easily displayed and discovered by all members. This was really what the Alumni website has been, but we just do a bit better this time.

Next, A rather bold idea. The Alumni website could be a place where fellow Alumni can post short articles about the cool things they’ve been doing. Like places they’ve been volunteering, or some interesting work that they’ve done. I believe it would be a great place to share the cool things people have been up to, and perhaps how it relates to their IPC experience or the core values. Alumni members can become contributors and have their articles approved to be posted.

I had some more ideas, but managed to forget them while writing the last two paragraphs. It’ll be awesome, I promise!

How long will this take?
I can’t be sure. The main concern is core functionality. Ensuring that the proper information is available, people can sign up for memberships and can book tickets for upcoming events is a major priority. I’d like to get the most critical parts done before the new year, and the website design finished by the end of January.
